Cliff is a native of Valparaiso, Indiana. After graduating from Valparaiso High School, where he participated in track, cross country, wrestling, and the foreign exchange program, Cliff earned his Bachelors of Science in Materials Science Engineering in 1993 from Purdue University.

Cliff is an active Triathlete and has interests in science and technology. He is functional in the French and Dutch languages and follows international news and business events closely.

He has always held a passion for investment analysis and followed that calling when he joined Compass Financial Advisors in 2005. Cliff was attracted to Compass because of its unique ability to deliver customized portfolios, fee based orientation, a dynamic and active approach to portfolio management, friendly service delivered by a regionally sized home grown business, and a fresh flexible entrepreneurial spirit.

Cliff believes that to realize superior returns and to remain truly diversified in today’s global markets, one needs a thorough understanding of business in a global context. To educate himself in this regard Cliff moved to Netherlands where for a 3 year period where he lived, worked, and became formally educated in a genuinely international setting. There he earned an Executive MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) concentrating in international business, finance, and strategy.

His experience and academic approach to research have earned Cliff a high level of respect regarding his opinions about investing in particular stocks and market sectors. His research and analysis have been published by The Motley Fool, an internationally syndicated financial news column. Cliff presently teaches a course on Investment Mathematics at Valparaiso University; a 300 level course in the Math Department’s Actuarial program.

Cliff believes he offers a unique set of advantages to his clients not only through a formal education from a well respected Dutch university, but also by having achieved highly applicable international business experience. In addition to living in the Netherlands, Cliff has been involved in business projects in Korea, Japan, South Africa, China, Dubai, throughout Europe and the US. Cliff is continually looking to further expand his international network of business contacts and knowledge resources in order to benefit his clients.

 Stocks fell for the week as investors grappled with higher bond yields, political risks around the globe, trade tensions and higher energy prices. The real estate and utilities sectors, which tend to be bond proxies due to their high dividend yields, lost over 2% for the week. By contrast, the materials and energy sectors posted the biggest gains as investors are starting to price in higher inflation expectations. In economic news, retail sales rose 0.3% in April, in-line with forecasts, as higher paychecks from tax-cuts offset rising fuel costs. In stock news, both Walmart Inc.

 Treasury prices dropped moderately over the course of the week on strong economic data and speculation that both the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank may raise interest rates more quickly than previously expected. On Tuesday, April Advance Retail Sales were solid while March sales figures were revised to 0.8%, and May Empire Manufacturing was higher than expected, causing a risk-on environment which led to a significant drop in Treasury prices. It was also reported on Tuesday that the U.S.
